Thinking Differently at ANZ Bank

ANZ Bank has been on a 7 year journey to transform their culture and mindset, according to the Australian Institute of Management.

The process started with employees being asked to select 10 values that best described the current ANZ culture, and their own top 10 personal values. According to Siobhan McHale, Head of Breakout and Cultural Transformation at ANZ comments:

The results in 2000 showed that employees felt the culture didn’t reflect their own personal values and, instead, that words like ‘bureaucracy’, ‘hierarchical’, ‘long hours’, and ‘risk averse described ANZ.

ANZ then embarked on their program of “breakout” cultural transformation. The result?

We have the highest employee engagement score of major companies in Australia and New Zealand . . . All the research shows a strong correlation between high levels of employee engagement and better business outcomes. Our total shareholder return continues to rise along with our engagement score.
