And Now For The Good News

Have you ever felt that television news is becoming more negative?

I started to feel that way several years ago, and pretty much stopped watching the news.

TV networks ‘love’ the bad news

News stations love drama. They love to be reporting on some large and horrible event that happened, because it lends engages powerful viewer emotions and makes the channel look important as they report it. The bigger the bad event, the better for a news channel. People watch to find out what’s going on. The biggest natural and human-induced disasters are ratings bonanza days for news media.

Years ago, newspapers and TV provided analysis and context, they broke down negative news to help develop understanding. But over time, something has changed.

News is no longer local

News is no longer local. News isn’t just what happened in your neighbourhood, it’s reported by a news network with offices across the country and access to news across the world. And with around 7 Billion people and 195 countries in the world, that’s a lot of news to choose from. So if for example there’s a high school shooting rampage in a regional city in the USA, it’s likely to make news around the world.

News is delivered through a more emotionally direct and powerful medium – television

As reported so well be Neil Postman in his classic text Amusing Ourselves to Death, the nature of public discourse has been changing. Over time society has moved from oral debate, to print analysis, to television soundbites. And with a visual medium such as television, the emotional experience of news is that much more direct and unfiltered. What we experience is up to the news editors.

A good news channel!

So, I decided that when I reach that point where I retire with multimillions of dollars and the appropriate time and resources to start a TV news network, I’d like to start a positive news TV station. There must be countless inspiring good news stories every day. Breakthroughs in medical science. People developing alternative energy sources. People coming up with new ideas that change the word, and putting them in to action. Maybe even politicians trying to do something good. Let’s develop a news station that tries to capture and put our attention and focus on all the good that’s happening around us.

Of course, the station will still report the major events, some of which may not be so positive, and with emotions around them that need to be acknowledged. A news station should be based in truth. But even when events are not positive surely it is possible to find something positive in the way that countries and individuals are helping others in trouble, and others are planning and putting in place strategies to help avoid similar situations in the future. Relate to problems with compassion, insight, and a constructive effort to find positive solutions.

That is, a TV station focused around the message of inspiration and positive change rather than a catalogue of the dramatic negative events for the day.

Facebook to the rescue

With all that in mind, I was delighted to stumble across the Facebook group Nothing But Good News started by Vicki Hynes. Vicki’s mission for the group is:

Have you ever felt that most of the news broadcasted on TV and the radio is negative and extremely depressing and that it is one of the major reasons why the world is becoming more and more difficult to live in? Well this is how I feel.

It has been studied that when someone does something good for someone the person receiving the good gesture sparks a great feeling of happiness inside them; this feeling is also present in the person giving the good gesture – whatever it be. What is also great is that most people hearing about or witnessing this good(kind) gesture too are given that great feeling of happiness.

So why is it that we always hear more negative news rather than positive news? Well, as we most know negative news keeps most people tuned-in! All this bad news is not just found in Newspapers and News programs either. Negativity is widely spread through out TV: in Soap Operas, Talk Shows, Series, those -in my opinion- ‘Stupid’ Reality Shows and our everyday Shows. We also find it in too many Magazines – which are most of the time worst because must of the articles are complete lies!

So I have made this group in hopes that everyone can keep sharing great stories that would warm our hearts and remind us that there is just as much good out there as there is bad – hopefully more good than bad! These stories can be as simple as your waking up and breakfast was already made for you or as deep as a child giving away their allowance – in which they have been saving to buy something special for themself but instead gives it to someone that they felt needed it more.

I ask everyone please not to make any negative remarks about anyone’s stories nor about anyone in general

I will be removing any negative remarks, stories, pictures, videos, posts and people.

Thank you so much for all your cooperation and I hope this group becomes something where people feel the need to share and read the good news of the world! 🙂

*****Don’t forget to invite everyone on your list ******

The group currently has around 380 members.

And, maybe, there are more of us who would like to tilt the balance a little more towards positive and inspirational news.

That would be good news!

Thank you to Vicki for helping us Think Differently about the news.
